The Claremont Colleges Psyko Taiko is a 5C organization that seeks to share in the Japanese art of Taiko drumming by combining both traditional and innovative elements in our songs and performances. Our members are from all five of the Claremont Colleges– Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Pomona, and Scripps. Our group is named “Psyko Taiko” because in English, “psycho” means crazy, and in Japanese, “saiko” means great… we aspire to be both! We want to make Taiko a joy to watch, because it is a joy to perform.

Hello World! http://taiko.aspc.pomona.edu/blog/?p=64 http://taiko.aspc.pomona.edu/blog/?p=64#comments Fri, 08 Apr 2011 11:24:34 +0000 jaggerjax http://208.43.114.54/~psykotai//blog/?p=64 Hi everyone!

Sorry for the slow updates– we’ve been busy preparing for performances in April, our most gig-filled month!

This semester, we’ve had two performances so far (we just performed at Scripps College’s Japan Benefit Concert this past weekend). We still have six more performances coming up this semester (4 in April, 2 in May)! Please come and support us– check this page for locations and times of upcoming performances! (For previous and upcoming events in 2010-2011, check out our Schedule page!)

We also had an amazing 4-way joint practice last month with UCR’s Senryu Taiko, Cal Poly Pomona’s Touzan Taiko, and CSUN’s Jishin Taiko! It was massive, and we practiced in a parking lot structure, so when we all played together it sounded like rumbling thunder… Sugoi! We’re definitely looking forward to more joint practices next year. Spread the Taiko love! :D

Other events of note:

  • Taiko in the Woods: We had our retreat in February! It was filled with snow and fun times. :)
  • Taiko Elections 2011! Congratulations to the following people, who will be Psyko Taiko’s 2011-2012 officers:
    Performance/Practice Directors: Skyler & Karen
    Treasurer: Ishani
    Equipment Manager: Emily
    Costume Manager: Su Anne
    Librarian/Historian: August

I’m really excited for next year– it’s going to be great! Thank you for all of your support!

Sincerely,

The Claremont Colleges Psyko Taiko
(Jackie Wijaya, Co-head Director)

It’s been a busy fall semester for us co-head directors, so not much has been happening here on the site. Sorry about that! Hopefully our next update will not be so slow.

Taiko has started off pretty strongly this year, and we had so much interest that we ended up holding auditions for the newcomers. Auditions were a couple of weekends ago, and we now have 9 new Psykoes:
August, Blendia, Danielle (not a newcomer to taiko, but still new!), David, Ishani, Maya, Liz, Patrick and Su Anne!

Yay! It’s exciting having so many new faces. :)

Otherwise, we just had our second gig of the semester this last Saturday, for a Pitzer event. We have at least one more gig coming up in the next week, so we’ve been pretty busy!

Not much to really mention other than these things, so I think I’ll cut myself short here before I ramble on another 3 paragraphs or so. Hopefully our next blog post will be accompanied with a site update. :)

Over and out,

The Claremont Colleges Psyko Taiko
(Emily Chang, Co-head Director)

The melody of a fallen tree http://taiko.aspc.pomona.edu/blog/?p=45 http://taiko.aspc.pomona.edu/blog/?p=45#comments Wed, 19 May 2010 01:48:37 +0000 Emily http://208.43.114.54/~psykotai//blog/?p=45 So, the end of another school year is upon us (has already passed, actually), and it’s time for the last lengthy blog post for the next few months.

We had our annual spring concert, “Rhythm Heaven”, on May 6th, and it was truly (most def) the (awesome) culmination of this year’s hard work. Good job, Psykos, and thank you so much if you attended!

Prior to our concert we also had the pleasure of attending and performing at Senryu Taiko’s own spring concert (we performed a short set at the end of their intermission), which was an amazing opportunity for us that we really appreciated. :) We also got the chance to have a short and small joint practice during finals week, which may have not been such a great idea, but was really fun regardless (fun things are always good ideas! Sort of).

Officer elections also happened at some point or another, and I’m pleased to announce our new directors for the school year of 2010-2011:
Co-head directors: Jackie & Emily
Equipment manager: Skyler
Librarian/Historian: Karen
Congrats, all!

Photos and videos from recent gigs will be online soon, so keep an eye out for that!

We have a lot planned for the upcoming semester and school year, including joint practices, potential workshops, the building of new drums (we have barrels!), and more. We will also be recruiting in the fall, so interested parties should get excited about that RIGHT NOW. :) Thanks so much for all of your support, and we’ll see everyone come the beginning of fall semester.

Over and out,

The Claremont Colleges Psyko Taiko
(Emily Chang, Co-head Director)

Our Most Gig-Intense Month… April! http://taiko.aspc.pomona.edu/blog/?p=35 http://taiko.aspc.pomona.edu/blog/?p=35#comments Sun, 11 Apr 2010 23:24:04 +0000 jaggerjax http://208.43.114.54/~psykotai//blog/?p=35 Hi everyone!

We just performed for I-Fest (one of our major annual gigs), and had an awesome time at our joint practice with UC Riverside’s Senryu Taiko! This time, we hosted the practice here in Claremont and then had dinner together. Senryu also gave us a rig for skinning our chu-daiko drums… THANK YOU SO MUCH, SENRYU TAIKO! We love you guys!! :)

We’ll be starting another drum-building process soon (we’re acquiring barrels at the moment), so expect to see more drums next school year! :)

Other updates for April:

  • Hooray, we fixed/upgraded our slant stands… so good-bye, bungees! Thanks to the help of Dan Garcia (HMC ’10), a Psyko Taiko alumni for his woodshop expertise. :)
  • We also had our Jumpstart Performance on 3/27 at Pomona, where we held a taiko-playing workshop for children in the Jumpstart program. Check out photos on our Media page!
  • We’re planning our final concert at the moment. If all goes well, it will be on May 6th, Thursday at 3pm in Lyman Hall of Pomona College. Save the date!

That’s about it. See you at the Hawaii Club Luau!

Sincerely yours,

The Claremont Colleges Psyko Taiko

We’ve had a fairly busy taiko month, and we have a fairly busy taiko month coming up, too. :)

  • Our Feb 11th Avery Lecture performance went really well, and we hope to perform for the Pacific Basin Institute again next year!
  • Just a few weeks ago, we had our Taiko in the Woods Retreat up to Halona cabin in Idyllwild! It was a lot of fun, and we’ll definitely be doing it again next year.
  • We have two performances coming up, one on Friday (3/5), and one on Sunday (3/7). The first is for the Claremont Karate Club’s Award Banquet, and the second is for a Claremont family’s anniversary dinner. :) I don’t think either are really open to the general public, but we’ll be sure to post about future gigs that are.
  • On Saturday (3/27), we will be performing and doing a workshop for the Jumpstart program.
  • We have possibly a few joint practices with some taiko groups in the area (Senryu Taiko from UCR is a confirmed practice) coming up in April, as well as probably our most busy gig-month of the school year.

Well, I don’t have that much to say this time round. We’re working hard at practice! Hopefully come next month the website will have changed a bit. Happy drumming!

Classes started up again a couple of weeks ago, and with it, taiko practice (yay)! We’re working hard on preparing for upcoming performances, as well as leaving enough time for fun stuff (going out for pho, taiko sleepover, and more to come). We Psykos be cutely tight-knit, or something.

We taiko heads have been working on improving the structure, quality and efficiency of our practices, but unfortunately are not quite there yet. It’s a process, and so on. Regardless, we’re doing our best to get better, and we hope that’s reflected in our performances. :)

Valentine’s day is coming up, and our taiko babies need more love, especially our brand new giant shime-daiko!! We just received the shime-daiko we ordered to replace the one that was stolen from our group last year, and it is heavy and very very cool. We must break it in! (Did you hear me, members? Time to practice!)
